Aqara, a provider of smart home technology, has announced the release of the Motion and Light Sensor P2, a new motion sensor using the Thread protocol and Matter standard. This product promises compatibility with various smart home platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings due to its Matter integration. The sensor features improved responsiveness and reliability through local networking capabilities.

Senior Vice President Cathy You highlighted Aqara’s success in distributing over 100,000 units of Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors in the previous year and emphasized the company’s initiative to combine established sensor technology with new connectivity protocols.

The motion and light sensor offers a combination of an ultra-wide angle PIR motion sensor and a separate illumination sensor, capable of detection up to 7 meters and a horizontal range of 170 degrees. The device is designed for multiple applications, including automated lighting, security, and climate control, while independently measuring light intensity for sophisticated lighting and window covering control.

The product is engineered for durability with up to two years of battery life. The sensor can connect to any Matter controller with Thread Border Router functionality and is capable of being used across different platforms due to Matter’s multi-admin feature. Exclusive features such as customizable sensitivity and timeout settings can be adjusted through the Aqara Home app when connected to an Aqara Thread-enabled Matter controller, like the upcoming Hub M3.

The Motion and Light Sensor P2 is part of Aqara’s growing line of Thread-enabled devices and represents the company’s commitment to enhancing smart home interoperability. More Thread devices from Aqara, such as the Hub M3 and Smart Lock U200, are expected soon.

The new sensor is now available for purchase in Aqara’s Amazon brand stores across North America, Europe, and Asia, as well as through selected global retailers. For more information, please visit Aqara’s website here.
