CUJO AI has released its annual Cybersecurity Report for 2024, focusing on the rise of phishing threats affecting home networks in North America and Europe. The report highlights a significant increase in phishing and malware attacks, impacting over 60 million home networks. The findings indicate that 67.5% of home networks encounter at least one cyber threat monthly. A notable concern is the growing targeting of IoT devices, such as NAS storage units, IP cameras, and DVRs, which are becoming increasingly vulnerable to cyber threats.

We’ve talked before about the importance of keeping your smart home devices up to date. This rise in attacks is why it matters so much.

Within the past six months, CUJO AI’s systems have blocked more than 3.23 billion cyber threats, averaging over 12,000 blocked threats per minute. The report states that 72% of all threats come from visits to malicious websites. Among these, nearly 80% spread malware, while 20% are phishing sites designed to steal consumer information. Phishing campaigns frequently mimic popular services, with banking, hotel reservations, and Microsoft services among the most targeted industries. Banking-related spoofed sites make up 16% of phishing attacks, while hotel reservations account for 11%.

IP reputation threats, comprising 28% of detected threats, involve harmful IP connections that primarily target poorly configured IoT devices. These vulnerabilities expose the devices to malware infections and brute force attacks. The surge in these attacks underscores the crucial role that network service providers (NSPs) play in safeguarding connected home environments, especially as IoT devices become prime targets for cyber threats.

NSPs are increasingly prioritizing security for every device connected to home networks, including PCs, smartphones, smart TVs, and IoT devices. By integrating tools that enable parental controls, block inappropriate content, and promote balanced digital habits, NSPs enhance the safety of the online experience for households. This approach offers automatic protection against hacking, malware, and other digital threats across home, mobile, and public networks, without needing additional setup from users.

CUJO AI delivers advanced cybersecurity services and network intelligence to more than 60 million homes worldwide, covering over 3 billion connected devices. The company’s services are trusted by major broadband operators such as Comcast, Charter Communications, TELUS, Sky Italia, Rogers, Cox, Shaw, Videotron, BT, and EE.
