Have you ever wished you could bring a little magic into your smart home? The Magic Wand Sensor does exactly that. Inspired by the interactive magic wands from Great Wolf Lodge’s MagiQuest, this clever device lets you turn everyday smart home actions into magical experiences. Whether you want lights to flicker on with a wave or sounds to play, this sensor can make it happen. In this post we’ll talk about what the Magic Wand Sensor is, how it works with Home Assistant, and why it’s a fantastic project for anyone who loves mixing tech with a little fun.

About the Magic Wand Sensor

The Magic Wand Sensor is a smart home device designed by Seth Brasile of byteMyCache. It has several components that work together to create a playful experience for children. At its core, the device is triggered by the IR light generated by magic wands like those from Great Wolf Lodge’s MagiQuest. You connect the sensor to your Home Assistant installation, create an automation to trigger when the sensor is fired, and you’re done.

DIY vs. Pre-Made Kits

There are a couple of options available if you are interested in making this Magic Wand Sensor. Seth has both a DIY kit and a pre-made kit available on his website.

Building your own sensor can be a fun project for those interested in electronics. It involves gathering the necessary parts, such as a microcontroller, sensors, and other components. This process may require some knowledge of programming and soldering. Building a sensor from scratch allows for customization and a better understanding of how the device works, although it can be a bit time-consuming and might require some troubleshooting along the way.

On the other hand, purchasing and using pre-made kits is a more straightforward option. These kits come with all the necessary components and instructions, making it easier to assemble the sensor without any prior knowledge or special skills. This option is ideal for those who want a quicker setup and are more interested in using the sensor rather than building it. Both approaches offer their own benefits, depending on the your interest and available time.

Integration with Home Assistant

Setting it up the Magic Wand Sensor with Home Assistant is a straightforward process. Start by adding the sensor into your home Wifi network. Once connected, it can be added to your Home Assistant setup via ESPHome. This allows you to manage its functions through your smart home interface.

Once the device is hooked up to your Home Assistant environment, it’s time to make the magic. You’ll need to create automations that go off when the sensor is triggered. A basic example is to turn on or off a light when the sensor is used. However, you can get more advanced than that and play sounds, trigger other devices, change the color of a light bulb, or more. It all depends on what you have available in your smart home, and what you want to automate.

Our Review

We loved this quick and easy project. We had visited Great Wolf Lodge recently, and it seemed a shame that the wands were useless after leaving. This project allows the kids to keep using the wands to have a bit of magic in their lives. We ended up programming one of the sensors to turn off a light ( pretty basic ). The other sensor toggles a light if it quickly flashes the sensor, or makes the light strobe in rainbow colors if it’s held on the sensor.

We only had one small hiccup with this project, and that was flashing the ESP32 board itself. We hadn’t flashed one previously, so getting the correct drivers installed so that our computer could communicate with the board were a bit of a hassle. A bit of Googling solved that problem for us though.

Oh, another problem we had – once the sensors were installed, the kids wanted all of the lights in the house to respond to their wands. 🤦‍♀️

In Summary

The Magic Wand Sensor is a fun way to bring a touch of magic into your smart home. Whether you’re building it yourself or using a pre-made kit, the project is simple enough for beginners but offers endless possibilities for customization. It’s a creative way to repurpose those MagiQuest wands and give your kids—or yourself—a fun, interactive experience that blends technology and imagination. From triggering lights to creating full-on magical scenes, the only limit is your creativity. If you’re looking for a project that’s as enchanting as it is practical, the Magic Wand Sensor is a perfect choice. Just be prepared for everyone in the house to want in on the fun!
