Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller Review
I’ve had this Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller installed for a while now, replacing my (very) old Rainbird controller. Honestly, I completely forget that I have this device installed. It just works, and I don’t have to think about it.
Setup of the Rachio controller was simple. I connected it to my Wi-Fi via the app, then setup my different zones. It has an easy to use walkthrough where it asks you which zones you want to setup, what types of plants are in that zone, and if there are sprinklers or drippers connected to that zone. Once this is setup, the Rachio just works. It figures out what the optimal watering schedule is for your plants based on your weather zone, and handles watering for you.
I had swapped out my old Rainbird controller for this one for a couple of reasons. with the Rainbird, I would end up with a soggy backyard in winter. The Rainbird wouldn’t reduce the amount of water used in winter, so ended up over watering for the season. Another big issue with the old Rainbird controller was that I couldn’t easily reprogram it. Any time I tried to adjust the schedule, I had to remember how to use the controller all over again.
The Rachio solves both of these problems. It adjusts the amount of watering used for the season, so no more soggy grass. It also is super easy to adjust the schedule, schedule a watering on the fly, or setup a grass seeding schedule. Overall, huge wins over the old Rainbird controller.
