Samsung Electronics has announced updates to its voice assistant Bixby, enhancing AI capabilities in its home appliances. The updates, starting from August 27, will improve Bixby’s comprehension of complex commands, making device control more intuitive. According to Miyoung Yoo, EVP and Head of Software Development Team of Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics, these updates aim to make appliances easier to use and enhance user experience.

Samsung is the latest in retailers offering better AI for home voice assistants, following Amazon, Home Assistant, and LG.

Earlier this year, Samsung introduced several AI-enhanced home appliances, including the Bespoke 4-Door French Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub, Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, and Bespoke AI Laundry Combo. The new updates to Bixby will further improve user interaction with these devices.

The upgraded Bixby offers three main capabilities: understanding multi-intent commands, recalling previous conversations (multi-turn), and responding to product-related questions (Device Q&A). These features will initially be available for five products launched in 2024: the Bespoke 4-Door Refrigerator with AI Family Hub, Bespoke AI Laundry Combo, Bespoke Slide-in Range, Bespoke Jet Bot Combo AI, and Bespoke AI WindFree Gallery Freestanding Air Conditioner.

Bixby can now process multiple commands in one sentence, control other connected devices via SmartThings, and remember the context of past conversations. This allows users to issue commands more naturally. Additionally, Bixby can provide answers to product-related queries and display responses on appliance screens where available.

A new feature called Generative Wallpaper is also being introduced for refrigerators with Family Hub. This feature allows users to create custom wallpapers by selecting from seven themes and six art styles, generating personalized images for their appliance screens.

Samsung plans to showcase these updates at IFA 2024. For more information, visit the Samsung’s website here.
