SmartRent, Inc. has announced the release of Alloy Deadbolt+, a smart lock designed for the rental housing industry. This lock is being introduced first at a Starwood Capital Group property. Alloy Deadbolt+ enhances the security, functionality, and convenience of smart locks by integrating with resident keys in Apple Wallet. This integration allows residents to unlock their apartment units or key-protected common areas using an iPhone or Apple Watch, removing the need for traditional keys. The process involves adding a resident key to Apple Wallet and then tapping the device to the lock reader for access. The lock also supports Express Mode, which eliminates the need to unlock the device before use, and Power Reserve, allowing access even when the device battery is low.
According to SmartRent’s Chief Technology Officer, Isaiah DeRose-Wilson, the Alloy Deadbolt+ offers a straightforward solution for secure access. This integration aims to reduce everyday inconveniences, such as carrying groceries or arriving home, by offering keyless entry. The lock is also designed to simplify operations for property managers and increase property appeal for renters. Similar to its predecessor, Alloy Deadbolt+ allows for secure access management, enabling residents and property managers to grant entry to others without comprising security. This smart lock technology helps reduce rekeying and key management costs and complements other technology platforms, such as self-guided tours and mobile maintenance.
Starwood Capital Group has been the first to implement Alloy Deadbolt+ and recognizes its impact on access control. Andreas Panza, Head of US Asset Management at Starwood Capital Group, highlighted the convenience of having resident keys integrated into Apple Wallet, providing hands-free access to properties. The security features of Apple Wallet ensure that resident data is encrypted and protected against tampering and theft, with the Find My app available to lock and locate a misplaced iPhone or Apple Watch.
