SmartyPlants, a startup specializing in houseplant care technology, has introduced smart sensors on Kickstarter. This technology aims to improve indoor plant care by providing real-time feedback and personalized tips. According to statistics, 46% of adults purchase houseplants annually, and 48% of these buyers have killed an average of five plants in the last 18 months. This results in significant numbers of dead plants across various regions: 190 million in the U.S., 38 million in the UK, 23 million in Canada, 266 million in Europe, and 90 million in Australia.
SmartyPlants, headquartered in London, UK, aims to make indoor plant care more accessible and efficient. The company’s sensors monitor light, humidity, temperature, soil moisture, and nutrients, transmitting this data to a mobile app. The app then provides actionable insights and personalized care tips, addressing issues like overwatering and insufficient light. This integration of smart sensors, AI, and a mobile app simplifies understanding plant needs and enhances the interaction between individuals and their plants. The system also connects to smart home devices through Home Assistant, allowing for various automation options.
Founder Ben Beavers stated that SmartyPlants targets the 48% of houseplant owners who have unintentionally killed plants within the last 18 months. The Kickstarter campaign for SmartyPlants has shown significant success, being funded within 17 minutes and reaching the top of Kickstarter’s technology rankings by the third day.
