Threshold has introduced a new smart outlet equipped with WiFi motion sensors aimed at individuals seeking to live independently. The device provides motion insights without being intrusive, offering users a way to stay informed about the safety of their loved ones.

The smart outlet is simple to set up, requiring only a connection to Wi-Fi and does not incur any monthly fees or demand changes in the behavior of the monitored individual. Simply plug the motion sensors in, and connect them to the app and wifi. Even better, these motion detecting plugs have an outlet on them so they aren’t blocking a potentially needed outlet.

The system offers real-time motion insights, alerting users if a person has not left their bedroom at the usual time, if there is a lack of movement for a specified period, if there is activity during typical sleep hours, or if motion is detected in an unexpected area. The sensors operate by analyzing changes in Wi-Fi signal strength to detect motion within the home. A minimum of three sensors is necessary to establish a monitoring zone, as they work together to determine motion through alterations in the Wi-Fi field strength.

We love this innovative new way to detect motion without relying on intrusive cameras. With all of the horror stories of indoor smart cameras being hacked and feeds being viewable by folks who shouldn’t have access, doing motion detection without a video feed is reassuring.

Users can view motion data in real-time and track changes or consistency in their loved one’s habits, with the device maintaining a two-week rolling storage of motion data. For more detailed information, visit Threshold’s website here.
